OpenAI’s August 18, 2026 Codex release improves the ChatGPT iOS and desktop-connected workflow with new Codex Remote controls, standard MCP forms, editable approvals, and a set of reliability fixes for tasks and workspaces.
Open Codex Remote directly from ChatGPT for iOS
The ChatGPT for iOS update adds a setting to open ChatGPT directly in Codex Remote on launch. This is a small workflow change, but it removes a navigation step for developers who use the mobile app as a control surface for remote coding work.
OpenAI also says the update improves host pairing reliability and prevents enrollment checks from freezing the app. Voice can now start from existing task composers, connect more reliably, and continue task actions in the background.

Standard MCP forms and editable approvals
Codex now supports standard MCP forms and editable Messages approvals. The change gives MCP-backed workflows a more structured way to collect inputs and lets users adjust an approval message before it is sent.
The release also improves diff-review stability and performance, particularly in large workspaces. A new Retry action appears when task messages fail to load, while fixes address tasks that disappear or remain unavailable after idling, reconnecting, or returning to the task list.
Sharing and synchronization across Codex and ChatGPT Work
OpenAI’s August 20 release notes add related sharing and synchronization features. Users can share a read-only snapshot of a Codex chat with anyone who has the link. The snapshot is static and excludes tool calls and shell input/output; OpenAI says known secret patterns are redacted, but users should still review the snapshot for sensitive paths, diffs, images, or other content before sharing.
Pinned chats now stay synchronized between the ChatGPT desktop app and iOS when the same Codex account is used. Android is not included in this release.
What developers should know
This release is primarily about the surfaces around Codex: remote access, MCP interaction, approvals, task recovery, and collaboration. It does not require changing a model ID or migrating an API integration. Teams should review the sharing warning before distributing a snapshot, and should confirm which host and account are active when using Codex Remote.
